Visiting the North Shore without approaching it by sea is like visiting a city riding the subway! Jump on the occasion to travel along the rugged coast where houses are perched with their windows overlooking the sea. For those who don’t have sea legs, the ferries to the North Shore offer a calm, perfectly safe ride with panoramic views and very reasonable rates. Keep your eyes open because you just might see a whale come to the surface for a breath of fresh air.

For those with salt water in their veins, a vast choice of cruises and excursions are available for you to closely observe the marine mammals that take up residence every summer in our frigid and fish-filled waters. You could learn how to recognize the fin whales, killer whales, sperm whales, dolphins and beluga whales, fondly referred to as “porpoises” by the people of the region. The latter are very sociable and playful and often steal the show away from the whales with their pirouettes and somersaults. The seal, also known as the “sea cat”, has its own little habits that make it just as popular.

You will be seduced by all these marine creatures that have fascinated humans for centuries and been the subject of many fabulous stories. Naturalists and biologists impassioned by these mammals share their in-depth knowledge of the marine environment: an educational and exciting visit for both young and old… sure to make waves during your holiday!

However, this is all quite interesting, but you don’t have to stop here! Are you a sports-lover with a restless spirit? Then, rent a sea kayak, for a trip along the shore and thread your way around the icebergs and their translucent arches. Near the islands and islets, watch for colonies of aquatic birds with dazzling plumage and brightly coloured beaks that give them an exotic look. Observe the small, friendly penguins, the “Atlantic puffin” nicknamed the “sea parrot”, the cormorant or the common eider. Go ashore on one of the islands of the Mingan archipelago and listen to the animal nature playing its symphony in a baroque decor where the monoliths are as picturesque as they are overwhelming.

Don’t miss the boat from Tadoussac to Blanc Sablon! Whether you are in an inflatable rubber boat, a passenger boat, a water taxi, a schooner, a catamaran or a cruiser and whether you are taking a short excursion or a week-long trip on the St. Lawrence River, you could still catch the contagious passion for marine mammals, aquatic birds and legendary monoliths! Water-lovers will really be in their element during a fishing excursion on the high seas.
