You are undoubtedly familiar with the snow crab, a favourite shellfish delight. Then try the snow trout, the winter smelt or the trembling perch… But beware! These prey, popular with ice fisherman, come to life in December and mysteriously disappear in April, as soon as the ice begins to break up… leaving you with five great months to break the ice and hang your line with your fellow fisherman. Pleasure and a few chills guaranteed!

Kill two birds with one stone and turn your fishing trip into a memorable excursion into the heart of the boreal forest. For lovers of the outdoors and admirers of ever-changing landscapes, put on your snowshoes or cross country skis and become a “coureur des bois”. Experience a total illusion! Trek towards the Manicouagan crater, an extraordinary natural site where a violent collision with a meteorite took place some 214 million years ago. A little further north, travel through the extraordinary and unique arctic alpine landscapes of Québec dominated by the Groulx Mountains, a chain of 30 mountains with summits reaching more than 1,000 metres. And if you are really daring, embark on a dog sled ride to Fermont, a Klondike that marks the Northern region of Duplessis, at the edge of the subarctic tundra.

In summer or winter, drive through this wilderness region of mountains, peat bogs, lakes and mighty rivers via the only road leading north that is suitable for vehicles, the 389, also known as the TransQuébec-Labrador. The road is 600 kilometres long connecting Baie-Comeau, Manic-Cinq and Fermont, a mining city located on the border of Labrador (Newfoundland). Overcome your fear of distance and you will be well rewarded. The rich biodiversity of the flora and fauna of this forest region continues to fascinate the regular population as well as visitors.

The train of the Quebec North Shore & Labrador Railways (QNS&L) supplies the Native communities from Sept-Îles to Shefferville, the northernmost city in the region of Duplessis. This train, providing all the amenities for travellers, transports many tourists, hunters and fisherman, looking for a change of scenery accented by the rolling motion and the rugged beauty of the landscapes.
