The words Shapituan, bannock, sweat tent, dream catcher, sacred drum (Teueikan), moccasin, talking stick tickle your ear? Let's sail along the Bersimis River and dock on the river near the village of Pessamit. Here, objects keep memories of the past, laughter merges everywhere and legends mingle with the present. The Côte-Nord includes four communities: Essipit, Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam, Ekuanitshit and finally Pessamit, located halfway between Baie-Comeau and Forestville. The Pessamiulnutsh have preserved their traditions and become masters in the art of transmitting them by offering a variety of activities to discover on the traditional Innu Kanapeut site, offered as a guided or self-guided tour. The first stop was in the tent designed for large gatherings, the Shaputuan, to design either a medicine bag, a talking stick or a dream catcher. Pessamit Tourism continues to immerse us in its culture by savoring the boreal flavours of lingonberry, fabulous bannock and Labrador tea while being enchanted by the tales and legends of this people. The visit has only just begun, so let's project ourselves into the time of the ancestors in order to understand their history and heritage in the interpretive panels available to visitors or in the exhibition located at the cultural centre.
A second place, just as enchanting, is located not far from Pessamit, in Papinachois. The people were referred to as "Papinachois" or "laughing people" by none other than Jacques Cartier, who met them at Tadoussac during his conquest of 1534. Subsequently, identity as Montagnais and Innu replaced Papinachois, who was abolished. Nevertheless, the removal of the name did little to take away the joviality of this community which continues to perfectly reflect its meaning!
The bay of Papinachois and its waterfalls will charm you with the magnificent landscapes to be contemplated throughout the hike in the wooden walkways and stairs recently installed. The experienced guides will guide you in your first introduction to canoeing in Papinachois Bay. For a moment you will be rejuvenated and the stories of ancestors and nomadic traditions will fascinate you.
Culture and spirituality are at the heart of Innu culture, hence the current emergence of writers, actors, singers and music groups. Culture and tourism are evolving rapidly in this small community with a big heart by pursuing its mission with the Uapishka resort located at the foot of the Groulx Mountains and the Lac des îles outfitter managed by the Innu Council of Pessamit. In addition, Pessamit is a gathering place with people from all over. For a weekend, traditional costumes and songs come back to life thanks to the Pessamit Pow-wow. Throughout your visit, you will understand the ties that unite the French Quebec peoples and the Innu. Among others, herbal treatments, hunting and fishing. Dive headfirst into this beautiful adventure filled with human discoveries and culture!
