Since 2007, Manicouagan has held the title of Biosphere Reserve, a designation awarded by UNESCO that recognizes the unique natural, social, and cultural richness of this region. From its southern tip, bathed by the waters of the St. Lawrence River, to the far reaches of the hinterland where the boreal forest gradually gives way to the taiga, the Manicouagan-Uapishka Biosphere Region (MUBR) ranks among the largest in the world. Millennia of erosion, the passage of glaciers, and the impact of a gigantic meteorite have shaped a unique landscape, of which the famous “Eye of Quebec” remains the most spectacular feature. The Uapishka (Groulx) Mountains, which dominate the hinterland, complete this portrait of wide-open spaces where nature asserts its presence. This prestigious designation also highlights the commitment of local communities to work together to build a model of belonging and sustainable development.
