Description

Covering an area of about 300 km2 (120 sq. mi.) and home to 684 inhabitants, Colombier is a small village located about 20 km (12 mi.) east of Forestville. Visitors will be amazed at the variety of different environments, both on land and at sea, and the rich biodiversity of its plant and animal life.

Colombier residents had long depended on the forest for survival but, at the beginning of the 21st century,  they began harvesting peat and  also working to protect and enhance its greatest resource: the natural environment. In the heart of the village, visitors can tour the La Mère Michèle factory (at 569, rue Principale), where they will learn about how local wild berries - sea berries, cloudberries, lingonberries, blueberries and strawberries- are made into jams and fillings for La Mère Michèle chocolates.

Nearby, along Route 138, the Anse-à-Norbert beach is a perfect place for travellers to stop for a picnic or relax for a while. About 10 km (6 mi.) further east, a lookout is the perfect spot from which to view the fragile yet rich environment of the Hickey salt marsh. It's also a must-see for birders during the fall migration, when thousands of birds find refuge here. Quiet and watchful birders will be rewarded with wonderful sights!
